Ten students and three adults from Brenham ISD participated in the Digital Learning Pavilion, an exhibit at the TASA/TASB (Texas Association of School Administrators and Texas Association of School Boards) Convention at the Austin Convention Center on September 30, 2011. The exhibit, sponsored by Apple, SMART, SHW Group, and several other vendors, demonstrated how students use technology in all aspects of their lives. A large corner of the Convention Center exhibit hall resembled environments where students use technology – a classroom, a home, a café, the outdoors, and a theater. Each area was equipped with cutting-edge technology where students were assigned a lesson to demonstrate as convention attendees went through the Digital Learning Pavilion. It was the students’ job to explain to administrators and school board members how they were completing the lesson by using technology.

Students got to use iPads for most of the day along with SMART Boards and computers. Some students showed the adults how Facebook and online resources such as Wikipedia could be used to gather information quickly. Some of the students worked with photos and created slide shows. Some used Garage Band to create their own music. The theater area showcased Manor ISD students’ projects from their video classes.

Two schools from the Austin area and Brenham ISD were invited by SMART Technologies to attend. The following Brenham students and adults participated in the Digital Learning Pavilion: KES: Jared and Jackson M., Christina and Veronica P., Emma S., and Pam Plagens (2nd grade Teacher); BMS: MoNae A., Lee D., Emaleigh M., Tracey Curlee (Dyslexia Teacher) BHS: Katie C., and Wyatt H.; and Ann DeBolt (Instructional Technology Specialist). It was impressive to watch our students explain to adults how technology is an important part of their lives. It not only makes learning easy – it makes it fun!
