Wednesday Spotlight: Leona Hernanadez- NHS MAP Tech Coordinator

Wednesday Spotlight: Leona Hernandez- NHS MAP Tech Coordinator

Leona, a senior at Brenham High School, has come up with a plan to help her teachers. Leona saw that her teachers were overwhelmed with all the technology that they now had to learn and complete due to COVID. Leona talked with her NHS (National Honor Society) sponsors, Mrs. Schulze and Dr. Marley. Then she contacted our assistant principal, Mrs. Thibodeaux and myself with a NHS service project proposal.

Leona suggested pairing NHS students as tech assistants with teachers who needed extra technology help. This would be a NHS service project, and teachers would get extra support. Leona called it MAP (Mentor Assistant Program).

After seeking approval, Leona created a Google Form to see which teachers were interested in pairing up with a student tech assistant. Next, an email was generated to the teachers listing what these tech assistants could do like create videos, scan in/upload documents, make tutorial videos, clear cache out, update computers and chromebooks, tutor students, and more.

From there, Leona worked with me to come up with a plan on what to train and how to train NHS students for tech support. Tomorrow morning, NHS students will be trained in the library by Leona. Finally, next week, the goal is to have an assistant coming before school, after school, or during enrichment time to technology assist teachers.

We are excited to see where Leona's plan will lead, and we are appreciative to all the staff and students that helped to make this initiative a success.

*A special thank you to Leona for creating this proposal.
