I Didn't Know Google FORMS Could Do That?

I Didn't Know Google FORMS Could Do That?

You may or may not have been using Google Forms over the past few years, but it is one of the greatest tools in Google Workspace.  Google Forms are great for quizzes, question banks, surveys, sign-up forms, entrance/exit tickets, and so much more!  Google Forms has also morphed over the past few years with amazing new updates, and features.  Such as adding pictures to titles, questions, and sections.  Or, having the ability to automatically turn your Google Form responses into a sortable Google Sheet.

Here are a couple of my favorite features and updates that I LOVE about Google Forms:

Data Validation:
Within Google Form questions, you can choose the three dots in the lower right-hand corner of each question and choose data validation.  This will allow your question to only accept specific answers (text or numbers) that you want entered.   This is a great feature when wanting to make an escape room for your students.  Use data validation to ensure students have to type in the correct unlock code to move on in the form.  It also helps to use sections within a Google Form to force users to get each question correct before progressing to the next section.

Lock Mode:
You can help keep students focused while they take quizzes and tests on their Chromebooks. When students take a quiz in locked mode, they won’t be able to browse other websites or open any other apps.

About locked mode
Locked mode collects email addresses and limits quizzes to your domain. In locked mode:

  • Students can’t use other apps.
  • Some extensions and keyboard shortcuts are disabled.
  • If a student exits the quiz, or opens any other tab, the teacher is notified via email.
  • You may only be able to access the quiz during scheduled hours.

Important: To use locked mode, you need:

  • A Google Workspace for Education Account
  • A Chromebook managed by your school for each student. Learn about managed Chromebooks.
  • Chrome OS 75 and up

Turn on locked mode
  • Open a quiz in Google Forms.
  • At the top of the quiz, click Settings.
  • Under “Chromebook settings,” turn on Locked mode.

Quiz Mode:

Tip: The quickest way to create a quiz is to go to g.co/createaquiz .

  1. Open a form in Google Forms.
  2. At the top of the form, click Settings.
  3. Turn on Make this a quiz.
  • Optional: To collect email addresses, next to “Responses,” click the Down arrow Down arrow and turn on Collect email addresses.
  1. Grade quizzes

You can see automatic summaries for all quiz responses, including:

    • Frequently missed questions
    • Graphs marked with correct answers
    • Average, median, and range of scores

    Grade individual responses

If you collect email addresses, you can assign points and leave feedback on individual responses. After you grade each response, save your changes.

    1. In Google Forms, open a quiz.
    2. At the top, click Responses.
    3. Click Individual.
    4. To move between individuals, click Previous Previous or Next Next.
    5. Find the question you want to grade.
      • In the top right, enter how many points the response earned.
      • Under the answer, click Add feedback.
    6. Enter your feedback and click Save.
    7. To save your changes, at the bottom, click Save.

Submission Text (Confirmation message):

When people submit a form or quiz in Google Forms, they get a confirmation message. You can tailor this message for any form or quiz. For example, you might want to give people an exact date that you’ll get back to them with the results.

  1. In Forms, open a form or quiz.
  2. Click Settingsand thenPresentation.
  3. Next to Confirmation message, click Edit and enter your text.
  4. Click Save.
