NewsELA and Poetry Month: A Match Made In Heaven

Did you know that April is National Poetry Month? Did you know you could bring a Poet Laureate into your classroom for free? All you need is a NewsELA account (there is a free and paid version).

Described by Poets.org, National Poetry Month was "launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996...." and "...reminds the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary event curators, publishers, families, and—of course—poets, marking poetry's important place in our lives".

This year U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo and the four Youth Poet Laureate Finalists for 2022—Alyssa Gaines, Jessica Kim, Isabella Ramirez, and Elizabeth Shvarts will host sessions discussing "their journey into poetry, read some of their works, and answer questions from your students! This event is appropriate for grades 3-12" (NewsELA). Sessions will be held starting next week (April 11th). Visit here for session times and dates. Another cool detail for these sessions is that students can submit questions beforehand to be answered live during the session. That information can be found here.

In addition to the sessions, teachers can pair poems the session leaders wrote or poems from other writers such as Emily Dickinson or William Blake. NewsELA is a great text resource with a wide range of topics and subjects, not just good poetry! It also comes with paired questions for students to answer with the text or you can create your own. NewsELA offers texts at different Lexile levels ranging from 2nd to 12th grade. Click here to view ideas on how to use NewsELA in your classroom tomorrow!
