Using Virtual Museums to Teach Civil Rights

On January 16th, the nation will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Finding secondary resources for this day can be tricky. Google Arts and Culture offers free virtual online museums and exhibits, including the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. Currently, they have Rolls Down Like Water: U.S. Civil Rights Movement Exhibition for free online. The exhibit is a collection of online photos.

After the lesson, you could have students create a presentation for the class in which they take everyone on the experience but in their own way. They could do this using Flip, Prezi, or Google Slides.
If you are wanting to continue teaching the Civil Rights Movement or Black History, Google Arts and Culture also has a collection of lesson plans on the topic.

For more ideas on using Google Arts and Culture in the classroom check out TCEA's blog post which includes a link to a Teacher Implementation Guide.
